News and Insight - Tech She Can Turns 1
Who doesn’t love a party! Last month we were delighted to host Tech She Can’s first birthday party at Level39. Tech She Can was founded in 2018 by Sheridan Ash MBE, PwC’s Technology Innovation and Women in Technology Leader, with the aim of improving the pipeline of women going into technology roles. Now, it celebrates 1 year of officially being a charity!
So, why is Tech She Can so important, not only to us at Level39, but to the entire tech sector? The team behind Tech She Can recognise the potential of all girls and women – they collectively inspire and educate girls and women to study technology subjects and pursue technology careers so that they have an equal opportunity to participate in the jobs of the future. This is hugely important for the UK’s future pipeline of diverse technology talent, with digital and STEM skills becoming increasingly tough to recruit.
According to PwC UK research, an alarming 3% of females surveyed cited technology as their first-choice career and only 27% of females (compared to 63% of males!) at A-Level and university age, were interested in a career in tech.
Today, over 200 organisations are members of Tech She Can, working alongside industry leaders and government to shape new, inclusive education, skills, and workplace policies, as well as initiatives such as the Tech Talent Charter to shine a spotlight on the issues and barriers surrounding progress. It was fantastic to join the team to celebrate the significant progress achieved in just one year – Tech She Can has delivered educational resources (including animated lessons), role models (young women in tech) and ‘Champions’ (volunteers), inspiring over 10,000 children in schools across the UK!
So, as Tech She Can continues to make waves, influencing and educating more girls and women into tech, we reflect on the incredible and highly inspirational women we have here at Level39 and their journeys into the sector. As a community of tech entrepreneurs and businesses in Canary Wharf, we know that women are under-represented at an industry level, but we hope that with the support of the tech community, initiatives like Tech She Can continue to scale and thrive, enabling positive change for generations of women to come.
